Sir Tim Hitchens, President of Wolfson College at the University of Oxford, talks to Sanjula about his career in the British Diplomatic Service and as Assistant Private Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Hitchens explains the link between literary texts and learning to look beyond literal words to better understand what people really mean. He discusses his work as British Ambassador to Japan in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the way in which British scientists were able to help people in Japan better understand their risks and inform government health policies in relation to the disaster.
