Secular Left

The Illusion of Free Speech and Inflation: Debunking Conservative Narratives

Listen on

Episode notes

We delve into the complex topic of free speech and its limits. Free speech is not an absolute right and there can be the regulation of speech in certain contexts. A prime example is in a nearby conservative town where a vocal individual disrupts city council meetings with personal attacks on the mayor, correctly leading to the consideration of new public comment rules.

Transitioning to economic matters, we discuss a minimum wage increase in California and its impact on fast-food workers. We challenge the notion that corporations cannot afford wage hikes, emphasizing the importance of fair compensation for workers. Corporate greed and price gouging is driving inflation, highlighting the concentration of power in the hands of a few corporations as a key factor. Drawing on insights from economist Robert Reich, we argue that corporate dominance leads to higher prices and record profits, rather than inflation being solely to blame.
